Lancet Series 2022: Racism, Xenophobia, Discrimination, and Health

2022

This Lancet Series examines the fundamental role of racism, xenophobia, and discrimination in driving poor health outcomes globally, leading to avoidable disease and premature death for populations worldwide. The Series papers analyze how historical systems, power structures, and discriminatory beliefs have shaped policy, research, and science in modern society—and their direct role in causing and maintaining racial health inequities.

The papers in this series aim to frame racism, xenophobia, and discrimination as critical public health priorities, emphasizing their role as key determinants of health. The Series papers address the historical and structural origins of discrimination, the complex pathways that link racism and discrimination to poor physical and mental health, and how various factors, such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status (SES), can intersect to impact experiences of discrimination. The authors also offer recommendations and interventions to address the health effects of racism, xenophobia, and discrimination at the individual, community, institutional, and structural levels.
