Recent Changes in Suicide Rates, by Race and Ethnicity and Age Group — United States, 2021

2023

This brief in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report presents data on suicide rates by race and ethnicity and age group in the United States in 2021. The brief analyzes suicide rates over time for seven racial/ethnic groups in the U.S.: American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, White, and Multiracial; and by age groups from 10-65 years. The publication finds that suicides increased in the U.S. in 2021 compared to the previous two years, with the highest age-adjusted suicide rates among American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations overall.
