Lancet Commission 2023: Peaceful Societies Through Health Equity and Gender Equality

2023

This Lancet Commission report examines the relationships between health, gender equality, conflict, and peace. As the world faces an influx of overlapping crises such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and widespread economic pressures, global leaders and governments are faced with a growing inability to address these crises and their potential harms. The report highlights how improving gender equality and health equity can spark transformation in reducing conflict and building peace worldwide, and emphasizes the importance of community-led efforts that are tailored to the local customs and cultures that systems of health and gender norms are rooted in.

The report presents a conceptual framework with recommended benchmarks outlining how improving health equity and gender equality can facilitate peace. The authors also highlight the role of the health sector in reinforcing or dismantling gender inequality. In particular, the report shows how the COVID-19 crisis revealed gendered differences in vulnerability and impacts, but initial modeling and subsequent responses from the health sector were gender-blind and failed to address intersectional inequities.

The report is accompanied by a commentary article and a downloadable infographic
