2023

This article from the Lancet analyzes how COVID-19 impacted human rights globally, discussing the timeline of government action and pandemic responses— and the failure to safeguard social and economic rights for people worldwide from the pandemic’s origins in 2020. The article documents how the global response to COVID-19 was marked by human rights violations—providing a retrospective analysis of COVID-19 strategies, restrictions, and government abuses. The authors highlight the inequalities spurred by the crisis, including disproportionate impacts on minority communities and inequities across the right to housing, education, food security, health, and access to care. The article also proposes a human rights and equity approach toward addressing COVID-19 and future global health emergencies, providing recommendations for incorporating these frameworks into pandemic preparedness and recovery.
