Lancet Commission 2023: Pragmatic Solutions to Reduce the Global Burden of Stroke

2023

This Lancet Commission report presents solutions to reducing the global burden of stroke, which represents the second leading cause of death worldwide. The report projects the burden of stroke from 2020 to 2050, estimating that stroke mortality will increase from 6.6 million deaths in 2020 to 9.7 million by 2050. The report analyzes solutions to reduce the burden of stroke across four pillars: surveillance, prevention, acute care, and rehabilitation. In partnership with the World Stroke Organization (WSO), the Commission’s report offers recommendations and a roadmap toward reducing the burden of stroke by 2030 to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Commission’s report is divided into four main parts:

  • Part 1: The Importance of Stroke Surveillance
  • Part 2: Strokes Can Be Prevented: the Strategies
  • Part 3: Acute Care for All Patients with Stroke
  • Part 4: Tacking the Global Burden of Disability with Rehabilitation

The report is accompanied by commentary articles, infographics, and a summary video
