A Retrospective and Prospective Analysis of the West African Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic

This article published in the Lancet analyzes the Ebola virus disease outbreak in west Africa and its effects on the world health system. The authors describe many of the challenges that the global community faced in responding to the outbreak and suggests that the world needs innovative reforms to become more enduring and equitable. They propose potential components of a new global health framework, describe necessary aspects of a strong foundation for national health systems and solid leadership, and address ways to engage stakeholders, prepare for a crisis, and consider the role of the International Health Regulations – the governing legal framework for global health diplomacy.
