Homelessness and Health: Factors, Evidence, Innovations that Work, and Policy Recommendations

This overview article from Health Affairs analyzes the structural and individual risk factors that lead to homelessness in the United States, exploring the relationships between homelessness and health. In the U.S., over 653,000 people experienced homelessness on a single night in 2023. The authors review evidence concerning homelessness and poor health outcomes, and discuss programmatic and policy innovations toward addressing the root causes of homelessness—namely the lack of affordable housing. The article also discusses efforts for healthcare systems to address homelessness, partnerships between healthcare providers and housing, and other policy recommendations.
