Caught in the COVID-19 Storm: Women's, Children's, and Adolescent's Health

2020

This report from the Independent Accountability Panel for Every Woman, Every Child, Every Adolescent (IAP) focuses on the effects of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on mothers, newborns, young children, and adolescents. The report found that these populations are losing 20 percent of their health and social services in both wealthy and poor nations due to the pandemic. Global implementation for the United Nation’s 2030 Goal for Every Woman and Every Child, the global strategy for reducing preventable deaths, has fallen behind by 20 percent. COVID-19 has disrupted health systems’ capacity to care for women, children, and adolescents and has caused increased poverty and unemployment. Since the pandemic’s start in January, over 400,000 additional children have died due to COVID-19 related disruptions, 13.5 million children missed vaccinations against life-threatening diseases, over 20 countries reported vaccine shortages caused by the pandemic, contraceptive supply disruptions have caused 15 million unintended pregnancies in low- and middle-income countries, and there have been 15 million additional acts of violence against women and girls every three months of the global lockdown. The IAP’s report calls for a renewed commitment to universal health coverage, primary health care, International Health Regulations, and sustainable development.

The report is accompanied by an executive summary of the report’s findings, five country case studies, and two videos.
