Lancet Series 2021: Chronic Pain

This Lancet Series reviews the burden, best practices, and new advances in treating chronic pain. Chronic pain, which is defined as pain that persists longer than 3 months, affects more than 30 percent of people worldwide. Beyond the immense personal and economic toll, chronic pain is associated with lower life expectancy—even after controlling for higher rates of depression, suicide, and opioid use. The papers in this series underscore paying critical attention to the interaction among biological, psychological, and social factors when treating pain, and highlight promising ways forward for providers and patients alike.
