Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care

2003

This report published by the National Academies Press summarizes the findings of a committee of experts focused on racial and ethnic disparities in health and the quality of health care received. Unequal Treatment explores how persons of color experience health and the health care environment, including how disparities in treatment result from deficient health care systems and how clinical encounters may contribute to health disparities. It also assesses potential sources of racial and ethnic disparities in care and potential interventions through systemic strategies or cross-cultural education initiatives in health education. The report offers some recommendations aimed at policymakers, administrators, providers, educators, and advocates for how to improve medical financing, availability of language instruction, community-based care, and allocation of care to reduce health disparities.
