Racial Disparities in Pollution Exposure and Employment at US Industrial Facilities

2018

This article from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States examines the impact of industrial facilities on surrounding communities. Proximity to these facilities can have positive employment effects on nearby communities, however it is also well documented that racial disparities in exposure to air pollution from industrial facilities exist. The authors found that the share of pollution risk among minorities far exceeds their share of employment and their share of higher paying jobs. This implies that industrial facilities provide more negative consequences for minority populations through pollution exposure than is offset by potential economic opportunity.
