Polio Risk in a Messy World: Lesson Plan

2017

This is the first of two lesson plans on polio eradication in conflict settings, part of a teaching pack on polio vaccination and disease outbreaks in Pakistan and Syria during the past decade. The lessons are based on a National Geographic series about threats that vaccinators face in civil and political crisis settings. In this lesson students read about vaccination challenges in Pakistan and learn to apply a conceptual framework for global health to invite critical thinking about the complex social factors that influence preventable polio outbreaks. The lesson includes links to the required pre-reading, a lesson summary, learning goals, suggested classroom activities, and discussion questions. In addition to the two lesson plans, which may be taught as a module or individually, the teaching pack includes an instructor’s note, a selective annotated bibliography, and a glossary of terms specific to infectious disease responses in settings of conflict and violence. A more expansive resource pack on polio eradication is also available.
