Eradicating Polio in Conflict Settings: Lesson Plan

2017

This is the second of two lesson plans on polio eradication in conflict settings, part of a teaching pack on polio vaccination and disease outbreaks in Pakistan and Syria during the past decade. The lessons are based on a National Geographic series about threats that vaccinators face in civil and political crisis settings. In this lesson, students read articles on Pakistan and Syria, and consider the challenges, resilience, and responses of polio vaccinators threatened with violence. The lesson includes links to the required pre-reading, a lesson summary, learning goals, suggested classroom activities, and discussion questions. In addition to the two lesson plans, which may be taught as a module or individually, the teaching pack includes an instructor’s note, a selective annotated bibliography, and a glossary of terms specific to infectious disease responses in settings of conflict and violence. A more expansive resource pack on polio eradication is also available.
