A Quantum Leap for Gender Equality: For a Better Future of Work for All

2019

This report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) describes the gender gaps and obstacles to decent work for women, as well as promising approaches to address these issues. Though the majority of women prefer to have a job, the difference in employment rates between men and women has hardly shrunk in the last 27 years, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles, and women are still paid less than men. The report notes that caregiving—unpaid care and domestic work—has been the primary factor hindering equality in employment, both in terms of available leadership opportunities and wages. According to the report, achieving gender equality will require focusing on laws, policies, practices that shape the employment landscape—everything from inclusive care policies to better social protection.
