Population Dynamics

2018

In the first of three videos on basic population dynamics, Professor Sue J. Goldie introduces the three drivers of population dynamics and demographic change, which include fertility, mortality and migration. Global patterns of declining mortality, declining fertility, and increasing urbanization are discussed, along with comparative examples of trends in the individual countries of South Asia. Replacement fertility is defined, and the salient differences between "youth populations" and "aging populations" are highlighted.

This video is intended to precede the videos on population growth and population age structure, shown below.

Companion resources include the 2018 PRB Data Sheet, demographics country profiles, an indicator glossary, sample assignments, and a resource pack of curated background materials. These particular videos are prototypes for an upcoming series of 12 videos on demographics and globalization to be released in 2019.
