Incidence of Cigarette Smoking Relapse Among Individuals Who Switched to E-Cigarettes or Other Tobacco Products

2021

This study, published in JAMA Network Open, explores whether switching to e-cigarettes is associated with preventing relapse to cigarette smoking. Findings from a cohort study of U.S. adults suggest switching to e-cigarettes was not associated with relapse prevention for cigarette smoking. In fact, switching to any tobacco product—including e-cigarettes—was associated with an 8.5% increase in relapse to smoking over the next year.
