Resource Pack: Eradicating Polio

2022

Once a global scourge, polio is on the precipice of eradication, with Pakistan and Afghanistan remaining some of the final frontiers of global eradication efforts. However, against the backdrop of regional conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic that have derailed many immunization and surveillence efforts, several countries are now facing the potential reemergence of this once pervasive disease.

This resource pack curates resources highlighting the immense progress in global polio prevention and examining the key roles of polling and data collection, community and family engagement, new communication efforts, and more in building trust to enable widespread vaccinations. The resource pack also includes data, news, and reports that outline the remaining -- and now growing -- obstacles to polio eradication.

These resources may be useful to educators as they develop lesson plans, activities, or assignments focused on global governance, infectious disease, or public health prevention. Learners can apply critical and analytical thinking skills by exploring data portals, use articles and reports to engage in discussions, and examine state or country cases to understand how global polio eradication efforts have succeeded or stalled against the backdrop of political conflicts, limited resources, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
