Polio Vaccination: Past, Present, and Future

2015

This article by Future Medicine goes into extensive detail surrounding the history and future of polio vaccination. Both live attenuated oral polio vaccines (OPV) and inactivated polio vaccines (IPV) are currently used to protect against the polio virus. On rare occasions, the OPVs can lead to vaccine-induced poliovirus and IPVs will have to replace the oral vaccines after wild poliovirus is eradicated. There are uncertainties, however, on whether IPV can produce the same intestinal immunity to polio as the oral vaccinations. The article examines research into the effectiveness of IPV and describes the gaps in existing knowledge.
