Global Change and Public Health: Addressing the Ecological Determinants of Health

2015

This article from the Canadian Public Health Association delves into the ultimate determinant of human health—as well as the health of other species—which is the health of the planet. The entirety of human existence relies on the full and healthy functioning of the ecosystems surrounding our societies. Knowledge surrounding the full impacts of global ecological change on human health, according to the author, is surprisingly limited. Underlying these ecological changes are deeply engrained societal and cultural values related to progress and modernization, where humans ignored the ecological effects of actions while undergoing industrial revolutions. In order to discontinue industrial impacts on the environment, deep-seeded societal values will also have to shift towards more ecologically friendly ones.
