The Power of Investing in the Poorest Children

2017

This report from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) focuses on the inequities children in poor communities face daily, and the resulting impact on their health and wellbeing. Children growing up in poverty are nearly twice as likely to die before reaching their fifth birthday than their non-poor counterparts. Many of these deaths, however, are preventable through low-cost, high-impact interventions. Drawing on data from 51 countries, this report provides compelling evidence that investments in children living in the world’s poorest communities are cost-effective, saving almost twice as many lives per US $1 million as similar investments in non-poor communities.
