Youth and Agriculture: Key Challenges and Concrete Solutions

2014

This report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) articulates challenges facing rural youth, including poor access to education and skill building opportunities, restricted access to land, financial barriers, limited availability of green jobs, poor access to markets, and limited engagement in policymaking discussions. Although youth account for nearly 15 percent of the world’s growing population, employment opportunities remain poor, particularly for young people from under-resourced, rural areas. In addition to highlighting these challenges, the report also describes numerous case studies from countries around the world where communities have addressed these barriers to better meet young people’s needs. At the end of each chapter, key recommendations are summarized, ranging from gender equity interventions and vocational training, to broader policy approaches to expanding economic opportunity for rural youth.
