Water Under Fire: Conflict Settings

2019

This report from United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) focuses on unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene that children are exposed to while living in protracted conflicts. According to the report, more than 800 million children live in 58 fragile contexts across the globe and more than 220 million children live in 15 extremely fragile contexts. Despite water and sanitation being recognized as a human right, it is challenging to provide water and sanitation services to the people living in conflict zones worldwide. Alarmingly, more than 80 percent of the world’s poorest people are predicted to live in fragile contexts by 2030, widening the chasm of inequality. The report includes data on children who die due to unsafe water and sanitation conditions globally, as well as country case studies. It is the first of three volumes in UNICEF’s Water Under Fire campaign.
