Female Genital Mutilation: A New Generation Calls for Ending an Old Practice

2020

This data publication from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) describes global trends in female genital mutilation (FGM) over the last three decades. Though opposition to the practice is growing, progress is uneven—in some countries, FGM is as common as it was 30 years ago. Furthermore, in countries where declines have been observed, progress would need to be at least 10 times faster to meet the 2030 goal for elimination. Alarmingly, 1 in 4 girls and women who have undergone FGM were cut by health professionals—highlighting the growing medicalization of the practice. This data publication is also accompanied by a brief on FGM in the Middle East and North Africa, a brief on trends in Egypt, and a brief of trends in Ethiopia.
