Twice Invisible: Accounting for Internally Displaced Children

2019

This report from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) presents regional and national data about children living in internal displacement caused by conflict and violence. The report estimates that at the end of 2018, there were 17 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) under the age of 18 who were displaced due to conflict and violence. 5.2 million were under the age of 5.  The authors note that this number is largely underestimated, accounting for the 53 countries where data is available. However, this report marks a critical first step in better understanding the impact of internal displacement children experience more often than adults. It also highlights promising policies and practices for better supporting and protecting internally displaced children.
