State of the World's Sanitation

2020

This report published by the United Nations Children's Fund and the Water, Sanitation, and Health (WASH) division at the World Health Organization provides an overview on the state of sanitation in the world today and calls on the United Nations Member States to commit to meeting the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report specifically addresses the five key accelerators identified under the UN-Water SDG 6 Global Framework for achieving safe sanitation: good governance, smart public finance, capacity, reliable data, and innovation. It also includes five main sections related to the state of sanitation: the consequences of poor sanitation; progress made towards universal access to sanitation; policy and finance for sanitation; how to achieve an acceleration in progress; steps for governments to increase capacity and drive progress with effective approaches. The report is accompanied by a brief summary that illustrates a hypothetical future without progress on sanitation.
