Unveiling the Cost of Internal Displacement

2020

This report from the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) provides data from 22 countries on the economic impact of displacement. The destabilizing effect of displacement can limit internally displaced people's capacity to contribute to local economies; moreover, some of the unique costs of displacement are often borne by the displaced themselves, host countries, and the humanitarian sector. This analysis from IDMC estimates that internal displacement's total global economic impact reached $20 billion in 2019, an increase from $13 billion, or $310 per person, from two years before.
