Going Beyond Bike Racks and Pedestrian Crossovers: Achieving Health Equity in School Travel Planning

2020

In this case from the Western Public Health Casebook 2020, students evaluate the equity of school travel planning programming, a community-based approach to address barriers and facilitators to "walking and wheeling" to and from school. Using the Government of Ontario's Health Equity Impact Assessment tool, the case focuses on identifying relevant populations, potential impacts, and mitigation, monitoring, and dissemination strategies. In addition to performing a community needs assessment that considers unique environmental, social, economic, and cultural characteristics of the community, students will analyze if and how Health Equity Impact Assessments can be used to improve health equity among populations living in lower socioeconomic status neighborhoods.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 16-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
