A Knot of Contradictions: Systems of Intersectionality and Muslim LGBTQ+ Mental Health Programs

2020

This case from the Western Public Health Casebook 2020 focuses on implementing a community mental health program for LGBTQ+ Muslim population in Ottawa. Following Yasmin Baytar, a queer Muslim woman with extensive sex- and gender-based analytical training, she is passionate about developing program that truly centers the needs of LGBTQ+ Muslims. However, she must navigate finding funding for her program and collaborating with different stakeholders. Through the case, students will learn more about the Social Ecological Model, as well as systems thinking and intersectional approaches that support development of culturally sensitive programs.

This case contains guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 16-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
