Lancet Series 2022: Road Safety

2022

This Lancet Series examines the challenges and opportunities in addressing road safety in its second Decade of Action (2021-2030). Despite global prioritization, an estimated 1.35 million people die every year from road traffic injuries (RTI) and more than 50 million are injured or disabled. Papers in the series highlight how addressing the four main risk factors for road injuries and deaths—drink driving, helmet use, speeding, and seatbelt use—could avert 25 to 40% of the 1.35 million annual deaths. In tandem, focusing on trauma care in low- and middle-income countries, where 93% of RTI-related deaths occur, save thousands of lives.

Series papers include:

The series is also accompanied by an infographic of high-level data on addressing road safety risk factors and improving trauma care. The additional resources also include an interactive where users can compare across three countries the number of lives saved if certain road safety risk factors are addressed.
