Mapping the Nexus: Media Reporting of Violence Against Girls and the Normalization of Violence

2022

This joint report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and UN Women provides a comprehensive review of the evidence on the relationship between media reporting on violence against girls and the normalization of gender-based violence and discrimination. Along with analyzing global trends in media reporting on gender-based violence, the report explores the role of media reporting in contributing to harmful gender norms and stereotypes. The report also considers the evidence for how reporting could be used as a positive force to shed light on the root causes of gender-based violence, provide key information, and support risk mitigation. The report examines reporting practices and common tropes found in media reporting of violence against girls, and outlines approaches for more gender and age-sensitive reporting in media.

The report is accompanied by an executive summary and a brief outlining ten essential recommendations for gender and age-sensitive media reporting of violence against girls for journalists and news media organizations.
