A Decade of Documenting Migrant Deaths

2024

This report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Missing Migrants Project summarizes statistics and trends of migrant deaths and disappearances worldwide over the past ten years. The report finds that more than 63,000 people died or disappeared during migration from 2014 to 2023, with more people dying in 2023 than in any other year. The report details the location and causes of migrant deaths and disappearances,  finding that nearly 60 percent of deaths that occur during migration are related to drowning. Demographic information such as age, sex, and country of origin is also analyzed in the report.  Overall, the report aims to inform governments and policymakers who can drive action to facilitate safer migration pathways and prevent migration-related deaths.
