Children's Health: Population Dynamics

2017

These compiled resources on children and population dynamics are part of the resource pack on children’s health curated by the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator. Over the past several decades, countries across the world have made significant strides in reducing the number of children who die before they are five years old. As more children survive past childbirth and into adolescence, many countries have experienced a “youth bulge,” where a large share of the overall population are children and young adults. Seeking economic opportunities or education, many of these young adults are migrating to the world’s rapidly growing city centers. These shifts in population dynamics warrant a closer look at the specific needs of children and youth in these environments. The selected resources provide a window into the barriers and opportunities youth face in an urbanizing world, as well as the unique and powerful capacities of youth to contribute to the economic, civic, and social fabric of their communities.
