The Social Determinants of Health: It's Time to Consider the Causes of the Causes

2015

This article from Public Health Reports highlights the importance of social and socioeconomic determinants that affect health, and biological mechanisms that accompany and explain their effects. The authors also provide an overview of the challenges of studying social determinants of health, focusing on educational attainment’s effect on health knowledge, working conditions, social networks, and health. They summarize several studies that explain impacts of social factors and provide trends in data, health outcomes, and socioeconomic disparities in the United States. The authors call on public health and health-care personnel to collaborate across sectors, from clinical research to public policy, to improve health outcomes for socially disadvantaged populations.
