Global Progress Report on WASH in Health-Care Facilities 2000-2021

2022

This joint report, published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), presents national, regional, and global estimates for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in health care facilities worldwide from 2000 to 2021. The report tracks progress on WASH services according to the global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets and includes a special focus on WASH and infection prevention and control (IPC). This report analyzes and monitors WASH in health care settings across five services: water, sanitation, hygiene, waste management, and environmental cleaning. In 2021, the report finds that half of health care facilities globally lacked basic hygiene services with water and soap at points of care for patients. The report reviews global and regional progress on WASH services up to 2021 and outlines that safe WASH in health care settings is essential for delivering quality care, decreasing risks of antibiotic resistance or patient infection, and avoiding preventable deaths.
