Internal Displacement Index 2021 Report

2021

This data report published by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) comprehensively measures progress in addressing displacement around the world using the Internal Displacement Index (IDI). In 2020, 40.5 million new displacements were recorded, leading to a record number of 55 million total by the end of the year. The COVID-19 pandemic affected displacement data collection, which will be reflected in data on the severity of displacement, but the available data is still intended to facilitate monitoring of progress by affected governments, their partners, aid providers, development agencies, academics, and other stakeholders. The report provides a global overview of the impacts of displacements, contextual drivers, and policies and capacities. It also provides country-level data on 46 countries and their governments' efforts in addressing displacement and displacement monitoring. The IDI is made up of three indices: impacts (scale, severity, economic impact), context (environmental, socioeconomic, security and stability), and policies and capacities (data, national policies, implementation capacity). While moderate progress has been recorded in some of these areas, there is still more work to be done to achieve sustainable solutions for people living in internal displacement. The report is accompanied by an illustrative video explaining the IDI as a tool.
